New Delhi, Oct 24 (PTI) Aiming at transforming the freight movement by carrying more minerals at a higher speed, Indian Railways have decided to manufacture 5500 horsepower (HP) diesel locomotive.
Designed jointly by US-based Electro-Motive Diesel (EMD) and the Railways, the high power state-of-the-art locomotive will be manufactured at the Diesel Locomotive Works at Varanasi.
"There is a need to have 5500 HP locomotives for faster movement of freight trains with more loading. Currently, we have 4500 HP diesel locomotives," said a senior Railway Ministry official.
Considered to be a significant enhancement over the existing high horsepower diesel locomotives, the new types will be known as WDG5 locomotive.
"The WDG5 locomotive equipped with electric fuel injection and radial girds will run 90 km per hour as against the 75 km per hour speed of existing diesel locomotive," said the official.
