The Tamil Nadu government on Friday increased the dearness allowance (DA) for government employees, teachers and pensioners by 7%.

More than 18 lakh employees will benefit from the DA increase, which is effective from July 1. The arrears from July will be paid in cash.
"The DA paid to government employees, teachers and pensioners will be increased from 100 to 107% from July 1. The DA increase is applicable to employees of local bodies, aided educational institutions, village administrative officials, noon meal workers, panchayat officials, writers, pensioners and family pensioners and others," said chief minister O Panneerselvam in a statement.

The government would have to shell out an additional Rs 1,558.97 crore due to the hike in the DA, he said.
