SC ponders over reservation to Dalit Christians, Muslims

The Supreme Court decided to examine the issue whether Dalit Christians and Muslims can be provided reservation like Hindu SCs/STs.

Christian and Muslim organisations have filed writ petitions in the Supreme Court seeking reservations for Dalit Christians and Muslims.

Their main contention is why SC/ST reservation remain confined only to Hindus and why can't the benefit of quota in jobs and admissions in educational institutions be extended to dalit Christians and Muslims.

According to article 16(4) of the Constitution of India, government can provide reservation to socially, educationally and economically backward sections of the society to bring them at par with the well-to-do sections of the society.

Article 14 of the Constitution, however, prohibits discrimination in the name of caste, creed, religion and gender and according to anti-reservationists providing reservation on the basis of religion and caste shall be violative of the Constitution of India.

The Supreme Court admitted the petition to decide them on merits. UNI
